Chimney:
A Tulikivi fireplace can be used with masonry, UL-approved
poured-in-place liners, and all UL-approved pre-fabricated
chimneys for solid fuels. An interior chimney is the best option,
for an addition being better insulated it will also enhance the
thermal mass capabilities of the fireplace, thus radiating more
heat into your home. However, almost any existing chimney can be
adapted for use with a Tulikivi. All chimneys must meet local or
National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) codes.
Venting: The
adaptable Tulikivi fireplace can vent from the sides, rear, or
top. When using a top venting, a class "A" stainless
steel chimney is used with listed components to create a venting
system which is adaptable to most homes.
Foundation: Like
a conventional brick or stone fireplace, the Tulikivi needs a
solid foundation built to code. If the foundation is to be part of
new construction, the support foundation can be constructed as
part of the original foundation. If your plans are to connect to
an existing chimney or top vent, a foundation or a reinforced base
will need to be installed. Consult your Tulikivi dealer, architect
or engineer.
Hearth: To
protect your floor from sparks, use any conventional hearth
materials-or beautiful Tulikivi soapstone tiles to match your
fireplace.
Clearance: A
generous space between the Tulikivi and the wall is optimal to
allow for radiant heating and convection air to circulate.
However, clearance can be reduced to as little as three inches
provided that the wall is non-combustible.
Because all Tulikivi models are
finished on all sides, placement against a wall or in a corner is
not necessary. Your Tulikivi installer can construct a UL-approved
heat shield, which will significantly reduce clearances to
combustible walls. This shield allows the optimal spacing in most
cases. Please discuss clearances with your Tulikiv dealer.
